VCI supports health facilities in south-central Somalia, providing a variety of life-saving care and services.
VCI will continue to supported MCHs and conduct regular nutrition screenings to identify and refer
malnourished children to feeding centres. MCHs will provide critical pre- and post-natal care to mothers,
and work with traditional birth attendants to ensure mothers are able to have a healthy pregnancy and safe
delivery. Most importantly, VCI will work in partnership with community leaders and health workers in order
to build local capacity and ensure improvements in maternal and child health are long-term.
During this strategic period VCI will position itself to provide and support health facilities in the hard to
reach areas in Northern Kenya.

Efforts will be made to identify cases of acute malnutrition early on, which dramatically improves a child’s
prognosis. Nutrition outreach workers will be trained in the identification of severe acute malnutrition to enable local community management of malnutrition. Nutrition education will be part of the overall program to include appropriate infant and young child feeding practices, diarrhoea treatment and information about the importance of exclusive breastfeeding.
